Reading Recovery Center
Opened in 2005, the School of Education's Reading Recovery Research and Learning Center supports the training of Reading Recovery teacher leaders. These leaders spend a year on campus in the program and then return to their districts to train and support Reading Recovery teachers. Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term, early intervention program for first-grade students who are having great difficulty learning to read and write.
Reebops: A Model Organism for Teaching Genetics Concepts
Reebops are model imaginary organisms developed by Patti Soderberg to help teachers illustrate how meiosis is an important reason for the tremendous variation that exists in every species. They are constructed from marshmallows and other inexpensive materials. The Reebops activity was originally written for middle and high school students, but elementary teachers have found that they can use the activity to teach a number of concepts to younger students. The activity includes background information for teachers who may need a refresher about genetics concepts.
