Adult Role Models in Science (ARMS) Sponsored by the Center for Biology Education, ARMS is designed to help make science real and meaningful at the elementary level through long-term community partnerships. The program works to bring scientists and aspiring scientists into schools as role models and also to help teachers and parents to be role models in science. Programs include classroom volunteers, after-school science clubs, and Family Science Nights. ARMS also works to connect classroom learning to informal education venues. Seven Madison schools participate in ARMS: Frank Allis, Emerson, Hawthorne, Lake View, Lincoln, Lowell, and Mendota. View full record

Advanced Placement Institute The Summer Advanced Placement (AP) Institute, in partnership with the College Board and administered by the Division of Continuing Studies, conducts seminars for entry-level and experienced AP high school teachers. The institute's primary goals are to prepare high school teachers to teach or improve their teaching of AP courses; to familiarize teachers with AP program management, curriculum materials, testing, and reading processes; and to provide for professional networking. African Studies Outreach The African Studies Program offers a range of outreach services for educators and others, including a large selection of slides, videos, sound clips, maps, artifacts, and books for teaching at all levels; curriculum specialists to consult with schools; and regular conferences and workshops. Of special note on the program’s Web site are two features: Africa Focus, which contains digital forms of the program’s 3,500 images along with dozens of sound clips; and Passeport à l’Afrique Francophone, a unique resource for French teachers, with video clips and curriculum units. BioTrek BioTrek is the science outreach program of the Biotechnology Center of UW–Madison and of UW–Extension. BioTrek engages the public in the outreach mission of the University by providing tours and workshops at the Biotechnology Center on the UW–Madison campus. The program also offers workshops and inservices anywhere in Wisconsin for teachers, learners of any age, 4-H and other Cooperative Extension groups, community clubs, and any interested group. BioTrek's mission is "Sharing Science With Wisconsin." Career Development Facilitator Training Career Development Facilitator (CDF) training is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals who work in any type of career development setting. CDFs from past classes have included those who work in corporations, government agencies, technical colleges, small private companies, large universities, high schools and middle schools, correctional institutions, and entrepreneurial settings. All CDF course applicants must have a high school diploma to enroll in the class. This program is housed in the Center on Education and Work in the UW–Madison School of Education. View full record

Careers Conference This premier national conference focuses on all aspects of career development and education for work. It offers sessions for practitioners from beginning through advanced levels, serving anyone from youth to adults and covering a broad and diverse range of topics. The annual Careers Conference is hosted by the Center on Education and Work in the School of Education. Center for Instructional Materials & Computing (CIMC) The CIMC in the UW–Madison School of Education has abundant information for teachers and those interested in education. It has collections and services to meet the needs of UW faculty, students and staff, and of area practitioners in K–12 education. The collections include journals, reference works, professional reading, K–12 textbooks, juvenile literature, multimedia resources, tests and ERIC documents. Services include reference, interlibrary loan, bibliographic instruction, computing and media production support, and instructional services. Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies K-16 and Community Outreach (UW-Milwaukee) The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) provides extensive resources and services for K-16 educators--locally, regionally and nationally--incorporating Latin America and the Caribbean in their teaching. Continuing Education Classes (UW-Madison) A number of noncredit courses are offered at UW–Madison through the Division of Continuing Studies. Participants may receive any of several forms of recognition for taking part in continuing education courses. Distance Education Certificate Program This program aims to increase participants' knowledge and skills in online education. It offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers conceptual knowledge, principles of best practices, and practical strategies for application in the work setting. Participants learn via the Internet, audio-conferencing, and modular print formats. Typical completion time is one year. Distance Learning Center (UW-Superior) The Extended Degree Program at UW-Superior serves those adults who do not have access to a four year institution because of job location, community or family responsibilities. The program recognizes that its students, though dedicated to achieving educational goals, must also meet other commitments and address other priorities.
Extended Degree students may earn a Bachelor of Science degree. There are two majors available through the program: the Individualized Major (which a student designs her/himself) and the Elementary Education major. View full record

Distance Teaching and Learning Conference This conference is recognized as a premier international gathering of educators, researchers, designers, trainers, and administrators working in distance education. With more than 1,000 annual participants and more than 150 events, there is much to share and learn as an expert or novice in distance education. The conference takes place in the summer at the Monona Terrace in Madison. Educational Policy Studies Spring Semester Conference The Department of Educational Policy Studies (EPS) in the School of Education hosts an annual spring semester conference related to current political, economic, and social issues in education. Educational Technology Center The Educational Technology Center (ETC) at UW-River Falls is located in room 130 in the Wyman Education Building, and is home to a variety of resources serving faculty, staff, students, and area educators. The ETC is more than just a computer lab. It contains a variety of teaching resources, hardware and software, video recording and editing equipment, as well as production supplies and machines used in the creation of teaching materials. Exploring the Nanoworld: Research Experience for Teachers The Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program is funded by the National Science Foundation and is hosted by the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on nanostructured interfaces. The MRSEC RET program provides an intensive, five-week, full-time professional development opportunity for K–12 science teachers during the summer. RET teachers work with MRSEC faculty members and postdoctorals on a curriculum development project related to nanotechnology, technology at the scale of atoms. The program is a combination of research and curriculum development, and the resulting teaching modules are made available online. Applications to the program are available on its Web site. Family Science Night The Center for Biology Education connects UW–Madison researchers with Madison-area schools during Family Science Night Programs when UW–Madison faculty and staff share their expertise and research interests with the K–12 education community. Eight to ten UW researchers, students in the sciences, or scientists from local businesses gather at a local school to present workshops. These hands-on activities engage students, families, and teachers in the process of scientific inquiry and give students the opportunity to ask scientists questions about their careers. Games, Learning and Society Conference This annual summer conference in Madison is designed to foster substantive discussion and collaboration among academics, designers, and educators interested in how video games – commercial games and others – can enhance learning, culture, and education. The conference features speakers, discussion groups, and interactive workshops that focus on game design, game culture, and games’ potential for learning. Global Studies, Teaching, and the Curriculum Available for the first time in the fall of 2007, this program offers either a 24-credit master's degree for teachers or a 12-credit advanced studies certificate for special students. Both options will allow participants to critically reflect on major issues facing the world today and to plan new approaches to curriculum and instruction, from early childhood through secondary levels. Coursework is designed to accommodate teachers' work schedules, with classes in the late afternoon, evenings, or on weekends. Health Education Programs for Teachers and Others The Community and School Health Education Program provides training, technical assistance, and materials development for individuals and organizations involved in health education and health promotion. The educational programs are designed for individuals working in a variety of settings including schools, community-based organizations, health and human service agencies, and government. The program provides behavioral-science-based training in the areas of comprehensive school health programs, adolescent sexuality education, HIV/AIDS prevention, program evaluation, and community planning. History Teaching Alliance (HTA) The History Teaching Alliance (HTA) is a program that brings together individuals and institutions interested in history and history education. The alliance began as a project to create connections between the University of Wisconsin - Marathon County and high school teachers in the Wausau area. It now also includes K-8 teachers, the Marathon County Historical Society, and interested community members. IceCube: A Telescope Made From a Cubic Kilometer of Ice Below the Surface of the South Pole IceCube, a telescope under construction at the South Pole, will peer through the earth to open a new window onto the universe. Like its predecessor, AMANDA, IceCube will search for neutrinos from the most violent astrophysical sources: events like exploding stars, gamma ray bursts, and cataclysmic phenomena involving black holes and neutron stars. The IceCube telescope is a powerful tool to search for dark matter, and could reveal the new physical processes associated with the enigmatic origin of the highest energy particles in nature. International Children’s and Young Adult Literature Celebration This celebration is an annual workshop for K–12 educators, public librarians, education students, and children’s literature enthusiasts, with an aim to internationalize statewide reading curricula. Award-winning children's and young adult authors who write stories about different world regions highlight the work they feel is most suitable for classroom discussion. Two authors speak in the morning and two following lunch, with a reception and book signing at the end of the day. This event is sponsored by the Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC) in observance of International Education Week, which is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. LEAF (Learning Experiences and Activities in Forestry) Providing an educational foundation
for the future of Wisconsin's forests, LEAF connects formal and non-formal educators in Wisconsin with quality forestry education material. M.S. in Education Online Option This 30-credit MS in Education with concentration in Professional Development is offered using Web-based technologies to earn a degree by taking courses at a distance. No travel to campus is required. Participation in online courses occurs asynchronously allowing students to complete all class work independently and still participate personally with instructors and classmates.
Students will progress through the program as part of a cohort group of up to 25 students admitted each Fall. Students will complete two courses per term (Fall, Spring, Summer) and complete the program in two years. See the site for information about how to apply, costs, courses and much more.

Madison Professional Development School Partnership Each year, the School of Education places approximately 700 students in student-teaching programs, practicum programs, and internships in Madison-area schools. Some of these placements are part of the Madison Professional Development School Partnership (PDS). This unique partnership in teacher education involves the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), Madison Teachers Incorporated, and the UW–Madison School of Education. The Professional Development School Partnership currently involves eight MMSD schools: Lincoln, Midvale, and Thoreau elementary, Cherokee, Jefferson, and Wright middle, and Memorial and West high schools. The program's major goal is to prepare teachers to be successful in culturally diverse urban schools. An important program feature is an on-site university supervisor and/or coordinator in each PDS. Madison-Area Action Research Network Action research allows teachers to examine their own practices using research techniques appropriate to their inquiries. The practitioner identifies a question or problem to pursue, collects and analyzes data, forms tentative conclusions, and reports to colleagues and others about the process and its results. Master Administrator Capstone Certificate The Master Administrator Capstone Certificate (MACC) program is a partnership of professors and practitioners that promotes collaborative professional development for practicing administrators committed to advancing education quality and equity for K–12 students. Max Kade Institute -- Educational Outreach The Max Kade Institute, as part of its mission to reach out to the larger community, is involved in bringing the issues of immigration/emigration/migration as well as cultural and language diversity to children in grades K–12. By making its resources available to teachers and students, the institute hopes to connect immigrant experiences of the past with the present. Innovative and interdisciplinary curricula are being developed to encourage students to examine their roles in a diverse society. Measures of the Enacted Curriculum The purpose of this site is to encourage teacher reflection and conversation about classroom practice and instructional content. Using a survey data collection and reporting model, teachers can compare their own practice and instructional content to responses by other teachers around the country and within their school or district. Participating states, schools, and districts are able to make use of aggregated teacher reports (individual teacher responses are disclosed only to the teacher) to develop a base-line of information about teacher practice in mathematics, science and English language arts, or to inform professional development or school improvement planning efforts. Portfolios and Career Services The Educational Placement and Career Services Office (EPCS) coordinates the portfolio project and provides career and job search support to students and alumni. It works with programs to support portfolio integration, assists students with ongoing e-portfolios development, and maintains the information system that connects teaching and learning with the PI34 documentation processes. EPCS also provides students and alumni with personal and group career consultations and job search workshops. It provides an extensive set of internet-based job search tools including a state-of-the-art e-portfolio job search system, online credential requests and delivery, and online vacancy search. Program of Advanced Study in Equity & Cultural Competence Offered by the Department of Counseling Psychology in the School of Education, this program aims to guide teachers, counselors, and other professionals in their continued pursuit of cultural competence. Its three-course sequence will help participants become more aware of the ways in which culture affects their sense of self and others, understand how to dialogue with others about difference, and build the skills to effectively work with others who are culturally different. Program of Advanced Study in Psycho-Social Factors in Student Achievement The objective of this program is to develop an understanding of the non-cognitive issues that influence the academic success of today's youth and contribute to the achievement gap that exists between social groups. Issues such as class, gender, race, family academic values, quality of school curriculum, academic ability, self-concept, and skills are examined through a series of academic courses, conferences, and workshops that are taken for university credit. Program of Advanced Study in Secondary Special Education/Transition This is a 12-credit program in secondary special education/transition, cross-categorical with an emphasis in cognitive disabilities. Its target audience is already certified teachers – special educators or general educators – wanting to specialize in secondary special education/transition or seeking course work that would be applicable to licensing in secondary special education (cross categorical with an emphasis in cognitive disabilities). Courses, which are offered each semester and in the summer, emphasize practical applications and strategies and are closely aligned with the Wisconsin Model Standards for Teachers. The program is delivered through a variety of distance education formats (compressed summer courses, Web-based delivery and contact, and compressed classes available in locations throughout the state). Program of Advanced Study in Young Adult Literature Participants in this program will gain in-depth knowledge of the history, recent trends, and critical issues in young adult literature. Reading Recovery Center Opened in 2005, the School of Education's Reading Recovery Research and Learning Center supports the training of Reading Recovery teacher leaders. These leaders spend a year on campus in the program and then return to their districts to train and support Reading Recovery teachers. Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term, early intervention program for first-grade students who are having great difficulty learning to read and write. View full record

School of Library and Information Studies Continuing Education Services Continuing Education Services at UW–Madison’s School of Library and Information Studies offers a variety of high-quality continuing education courses, conferences, and workshops for librarians. Many of these enjoyable programs may appeal to traditional educators, as well as librarians. Topics include children’s literature, young adult literature, technical skills, children’s programming, puppetry, Spanish language, management skills, and reference services. Courses are offered both online and, in the summer months, in-person and range from one to 12 weeks in length. The course schedule changes each semester and during the summer. School of Music Community Outreach UW–Madison offers a wide variety of summer programs for music educators, private teachers, performers, and conductors. These programs provide opportunities for both professional development and non-vocational pursuits, with university credit and CEUs available. The school sponsors the Madison Early Music Festival and Workshop, a study abroad program for teachers in the arts, an educational video series, and distance learning opportunities. Summer Institute on Education and Work The annual Summer Institute on Education and Work offers workshops that focus on developing knowledge and skills in one or more of the 12 Career Development Facilitator (CDF) competencies. The institute is an ideal way to gain professional development and continuing education credit in a relaxed, informal setting on the UW–Madison campus. While designed specifically for certified CDFs and CDF instructors, the workshops are open to anyone who works in career development or education for work. Theatre and Drama Programs for Teachers and Others Numerous theatre conferences, workshops, and publications for theatre and drama professionals and the general public are offered through the UW–Madison Division of Continuing Studies. Traditional High School Program Each semester, including summer sessions, students with junior standing and strong high school academic records may enroll in UW-Madison courses for credit. UW-Oshkosh 2004 Geology Field Camp A 6-week summer program with an early June start date. The primary goal of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh geology field camp is to teach students vital field skills and mapping techniques in a wide variety of geological environments. For this reason, the UW Oshkosh geology field camp is based in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, which offer diverse and well-exposed rocks for study. The Wasatch Mountains mark the intersection of a wide array of tectonic elements in North American Cordillera that include the Sevier fold-thrust belt, the Laramide Uinta uplift, the Tertiary Cottonwood intrusive belt, and the Basin and Range rift. Students at the camp gain practical experience and instruction in geologic mapping and field analysis of geologic structures and sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rock assemblages.

Wallace Fellows Program The Wallace Fellows Program is a partnership of professors, practitioners, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction that promotes collaborative professional development for experienced urban principals. One important objective of the Wallace Fellows is to provide an avenue for administrators to develop the knowledge, skills, and reflective practices necessary to obtain master administrator licensure from the Department of Public Instruction. Home to more than 50 research projects, the center examines four aspects of education: teacher, learner, organizational setting, and curriculum. Wisconsin Teacher Enhancement Program (WisTEP) The Wisconsin Teacher Enhancement Program is a national professional development program for K–14 science and health educators. WisTEP provides a continuum of opportunities and resources including an annual summer institute, academic-year programming, and program collaboration. Classes allow teachers to earn graduate credits, network with colleagues and UW scientists, share ideas and develop new teaching materials, and earn credit toward re-certification and pay increases.
